FOOTBALL

  • Anderson played in 175 of 177 possible games with the Cincinnati Bengals between 1996 and 2006 before being limited due to injuries last season.

The 33-year-old right tackle, who made four consecutive Pro Bowl appearances between 2003 and 2006, had lost his starting job to franchise player Stacy Andrews in 2007.

  • For instead of having a game chock full of clear storylines involving season- ending injuries, impact first-round draft choices or returning Super Bowl MVPs, those authors assigned to pen the tale of "New York vs. Miami, Episode 86" on Sunday are instead left to grasp at myriad meaningless straws.

Oh sure, there's the Brett Favre thing.

BASKETBALL

  • Wright, 33, played in 12 games last season with the Atlanta Hawks and five games with the Sacramento Kings, averaging 0.8 points and 2.1 rebounds per contest.

The 6-foot-11, 255-pound center was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers with the seventh overall pick in the 1996 NBA Draft and has played in 761 career games (445 starts) with averages of 8.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

  • Camille Little added 13 points and five rebounds for the Storm, who have won three of four. Yolanda Griffith had 10 points with a team-best six boards.

BASEBALL

  • The surgery will take place at Rush University Medical Center, and the American League MVP candidate will have the wrist re-evaluated down the road to determine the healing progress.

Quentin was a late scratch Tuesday after injuring the wrist Monday in Cleveland.

  • That's right, the Colorado Rockies are right back in the mix and with nine of their 21 games remaining against the division's top two teams, who says they can't steal this thing once it is all said and done? As I write this, the D'Backs hold a one-game edge on the Dodgers in the West with a critical three-game set between the two of them slated to get underway at Chavez Ravine. Colorado, meanwhile, finds itself six back thanks to wins in 12 of its last 18 games.

Of course, the Rockies were 6 1/2 games back in the division last year when they went on one of the most amazing runs in the history of sports, winning 12 their final 13 regular season games before winning the first eight games of the postseason on their way to an NL pennant.

HOCKEY

  • Marian Hossa, Brian Campbell, Wade Redden, Sean Avery were among the crowd of high profile players who signed with new clubs on the first two days of free agency.

Notable names have popped up in free agency news since then, and just last week, future Hall of Famer Joe Sakic re-signed with the Colorado Avalanche. But Sakic wasn't really on the market, he was just deciding whether or not to retire or return to the Avs for another year.

  • The 26-year-old Stoll was acquired from Edmonton in a June trade that sent defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky to the Oilers.

Selected by Edmonton in the second round (36th overall) of the 2002 draft, Stoll compiled 14 goals and 36 points with a frosty minus-23 rating in 81 games last season for the Oilers.

SOCCER

  • Due to international duty, the team's leading scorer, striker Landon Donovan, will be out along with fellow American Eddie Lewis and England's David Beckham. Canadian Ante Jazic will also not be available.

Donovan has scored 16 goals and recorded seven assists in 18 games, while Beckham has tallied five times with eight assists in 20 matches. Their absence leaves the scoring load to Edson Buddle, who has notched 12 goals in 19 games but will be the lone threat in attack for the Galaxy.

  • The Crew have taken over the top spot in the Eastern Conference after winning four of their last five while New England has slipped in recent weeks, with just one win in five.

The Crew's latest victory - the team's third straight - was 2-1 at FC Dallas last Saturday.

  • Team officials made the announcement at the Richmond International Raceway, where the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will run the "cut-off" race this weekend before the 10-race "Chase for the Sprint Cup" begins September 14 at New Hampshire.

"I'm honored to join Tony and the Stewart-Haas organization. I'm really excited about taking this next step and I feel it's a challenge I'm ready for." • Wheldon, who made his first IndyCar start with Panther at the Chicagoland Speedway in 2002, has signed a multi-year contract to drive the No.4 car. He'll replace Vitor Meira, who has been with the team since 2006.

"I'm very excited to be joining the entire Panther Racing crew," Wheldon said. "I know that we'll be fighting for outright victories, the Indianapolis 500 title and the league championship." Target Chip Ganassi Racing announced Tuesday that Dario Franchitti will replace Wheldon in the team's No.10 car, starting in 2009. Franchitti, the 2007 Indianapolis 500 winner and IndyCar Series champion, will return to the open-wheel ranks after spending one season in NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series competition.

TENNIS

  • Nadal is a perfect 5-0 lifetime against Murray, including 3-0 already this year. The Spaniard topped the Scotsman in Hamburg, Wimbledon and Toronto earlier in the season and is 3-0 versus the 21-year-old Murray on hardcourts over the last two years.

Murray will appear in his first-ever major semifinal, while Nadal will perform in his first career U.S. Open semi.

Bivens. "In that spirit, we will continue communicating with our diverse tour players to develop a better alternative." The LPGA said it will announce a revised approach -- absent playing penalties -- by the end of the year.

BOXING

  • "When life gives you De La Hoya-Pacquiao...make another fight instead." So, armed with the determination to do our friends at Golden Boy Promotions and HBO PPV one better this Dec. 6, I enlisted the help of several colleagues by requesting they give me "one fight that's out there now that you'd most want to see." And rather than relying solely on the cynical, left-leaning press with which I've been inexorably linked for nearly two decades, I scattered the outbox with representatives from other limbs of the sport's family tree as well - including promoters, publicists and television executives.

The response was rapid and varied, indicating to me...

  • for his upcoming fight with IBF light-welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi, set for Las Vegas on November 22.

HORSES

  • Trained by Rick Dutrow, Jr., Kip Deville will be ridden by Cornelio Velasquez from post four in the eight-horse field. In last year's renewal he was second to Shakespeare before beginning a three-race win streak.
