  • Huesman, a Chattanooga alum, has over 25 years of college coaching experience, most recently as defensive coordinator of Richmond the past five seasons. Richmond took home the FCS title last weekend thanks to Huesman's defense allowing a mere 39 yards on the ground in a 24-7 victory over Montana.

Huesman takes over as head coach for Rodney Allison, whose contract was not renewed following a horrid 1-11 campaign.

  • The rainy weather that has blanketed Chattanooga for several days did little to dampen the Grizzlies' excitement.

"It's 70 degrees warmer," said Montana coach Bobby Hauck. "Our guys think that's great." Many of the Grizzlies practiced in short-sleeved shirts and shorts on Wednesday afternoon at Finley Stadium as they prepared for Friday night's national championship game against Richmond.

  • But these two hard-nosed, workmanlike teams have survived the 16-team field and won difficult games on the road to set up an unexpected, yet compelling title game.

"I am not sure what to expect from this team," Montana coach Bobby Hauck said in July at the Big Sky Conference media event in Park City, UT. "But that is what makes this season exciting." Like a child anticipating Christmas morning, Hauck has a bigger package than expected under his championship tree, as the Grizzlies play for their fourth national crown and the sixth-year coach looks for his first title as the head man.

  • "Certainly, we are happy for Brock, but sorry to see him go," new Purdue coach Danny Hope said in a statement. "When I took the job at Purdue, I knew it was likely there would be some attrition on the staff, with guys leaving to become head coaches or coordinators. Like every head coach, I keep a short list of coaches to consider for vacancies, and we will get a quality replacement on our staff as quickly as possible." Illinois State assistant athletics director Todd Kober said a news conference would held Wednesday afternoon for Spack.

The Redbirds needed a replacement for Denver Johnson, who resigned following this past season. Johnson completed his ninth year as head at ISU with a 3-8 record. His overall mark with the Redbirds was 48-54.

Seventh-ranked Richmond (12-3) battled back from a 20-7 deficit in the final 12 minutes to advance to the championship game for the first time in school history. The Spiders will meet Montana (14-1) at 8 p.m. next Friday in Chattanooga, TN.

"It's exciting," said Montana coach Bobby Hauck, who will be taking his team to the title game for the second time in six years. "It's not lost on me that we came in and beat the No. 1 team in the country on their home field." Montana advanced to the FCS final for

  • Coaches talk all season long about winning the turnover battle and in postseason play there is even more emphasis on that statistic. If they ever needed a sermon illustration for that point, this weekend's FCS games were the perfect examples.

Appalachian State saw its three-year reign as FCS champion come to an end as the Mountaineers committed seven turnovers in a 33-13 loss to Richmond. Weber State helped stake Montana to an early lead with miscues and finished with three turnovers in a 24-13 defeat. Neither Richmond nor Montana had a single turnover in winning those games.
